In The Hot Seat: Robert Nixon - Overdressed & Underprepared

Robert Nixon is a seriously stylish guy who has the enviable job title of Watch Buyer and shares his fashion finds on his blog Overdressed & Underprepared. It is his Instagram account that is a real gem, where the star of the show is Hendrick, Robert's seven month old Cocker Spaniel.

We found out all about his love of fashion in our latest interview where he wears Yogi Shoes Winstone in Crepe Black Leather throughout with photos by Olivier Yoan.

Describe your personal style:

Robert Nixon: Simple with pops of personality. I like textures and having something slightly different in each outfit. I believe that every outfit needs a statement of some kind.

What was the first item of clothing you ever bought for yourself?

Robert Nixon: As far as I can remember, it’s the coat I’m wearing in these photos. I bought it as soon as I knew I wasn’t going to get any taller.

Any faux-pas you'd rather forget...?

Robert Nixon: There were some bright blue trousers once, and a bright blue gilet… It was bold but not so brilliant.

Tell us about the oldest item in your wardrobe:

Robert Nixon: Again, it’s the coat. I’ve repaired this coat more times than I can count, and go through phases of wearing it constantly. How well it fits is my way of knowing if I need to lose a few pounds.

What's the most expensive thing you've ever bought, clothing-wise?

Robert Nixon: A pair of Edwin Japanese Selvedge denim jeans. Not cheap but they have lasted for years, and look better with each wear.

How do you style your Yogi shoes?

Robert Nixon: I kept it quite simple and smart casual. Once they’re worn in some more, I’ll start wearing them casually.

What do your Yogi shoes say about you?

Robert Nixon: That I like to mix comfort with style. It is possible to have both.

Yogi was born in the 90s, what were you doing, what were you wearing and what were you listening to back in the day?

Robert Nixon: Having also been born in the 90s, it’s not a decade I can recall much of, but I was listening to a lot of Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, and Mike & The Mechanics, thanks to my dad’s taste in music.

This season you'll be wearing…

Robert Nixon: As many layers as possible. I recently got a puppy, so I’m out walking twice a day regardless of the weather, but I’ve always loved layering. This season definitely feels like I’m focusing on smarter styles again.

Who are your style heroes?

Robert Nixon: Ryan Reynolds knows how to wear a suit, but for everyday styling, take lessons from Jeff Goldblum. The man wears whatever he wants to wear with confidence, and that’s a rare skill.

What fragrance do you wear?

Robert Nixon: Barfly from Scotch and Soda. I used to like designer fragrances etc, but I was given Barfly, I love the smell, and have received more compliments on it than any other fragrance I’ve worn.

Which is the best dressed nation?

Robert Nixon: Japan. In fashion, the Japanese have such an eye for detail, quality, and like Jeff Goldblum, have a tendency to wear whatever they want without questioning it.

What can we expect to see for Autumn/Winter?

Robert Nixon: Fits are getting bigger - I don’t remember the last time I saw anything slim on the menswear catwalks - and fabrics are getting more technical. There’s also an ongoing shift toward paying for quality over quantity.

Which Yogi shoes will you be adding to your Autumn Winter wardrobe?

Robert Nixon: The Winstone Crepe in black leather… I love them. Although I’ve just seen the new Winstone Crepe in black waxed leather, and now I have mild shoe envy.
