9 Of The Biggest Brit Awards Moments Of All Time

The Brit Awards promises to bring together some of the biggest names in the music industry to celebrate their work. This year is the 39th edition of the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards. It will be held on 20th Feb at The O2 Arena in London. Whilst this year promises to showcase some of the best talent currently present in the charts, we thought we would take a look back throughout history at the most iconic moments yet!
-
1. The KLF's Retirement (1992)
With plans to retire, The KLF used their final Brit Awards performance to really make an exit. They performed an ear-splitting metal rework of their track 3am Eternal in collaboration with Extreme Noise Terror. The performance saw frontman Bill Drummond fire machine-gun blanks over the crowd, as their publicists declared "ladies and gentlemen, The KLF have now left the music business", marking the end of their career.
-
2. Madonna's Epic Fall During Living For Love Performance (2015)
During her first performance at the Brits in 20 years, she managed to steal the show by being yanked backwards by one of her dancers and falling down the steps! But, credit where credit is due, she got straight back up and continued to deliver another magnificent performance.
-
3. Amy Whinehouse's Performance (2008)
At the time, she had garnered a reputation for somewhat unreliable performances. Yet, despite her very public demons, she defied her critics with a beautiful performance of The Zuntons' Valerie alongside Mark Ronson. She later returned to stage alone for another stunning performance of Love is a Losing Game.
-
4. The Spice Girls Debut & Ginger Spice's Iconic Flag Dress (1997)
It's been over two decades since the Spice Girls first stormed our screens and performed at the Brit Awards. Legend has it that Geri, along with her sisters' help, made the Union Jack dress with a tea towel! Making newspapers around the world, it's arguably the most iconic Brit Awards moment of them all!
-
5. Prince Drops 2 New Tracks (2006)
Making his comeback at the Brits in 2006, the artist eased in 2 tracks from his forthcoming album 3121. As well as this, he energetically performed a selection of his biggest hits, including Te Amo Corazon, Fury, Purple Rain and Lets Go Crazy. Following this, was his 21-date reign at London's 02 Arena.
-
6. Lady Gaga (2010)
Back in 2010, Lady Gaga took home 3 international Brit Awards: Best Female Performer, Best Female Breakthrough Act and Best Album. However, it seems she is most remembered for wearing an outfit resembling a tiered wedding cake. During her performance (which she dedicated to the late Alexander McQueen) she stepped out the dress, revealing a lace bodysuit, and continued to perform Telephone and Dance In The Dark.
-
7. Kate Moss Accepts David Bowie's Award (2014)
Bowie, the recipient of the 2014 Brit Award for Best British Male specifically chose Kate Moss to accept his award on his behalf. She read out a statement, in which he thanked his supporters and, to top it all off, Moss wore the pop icon's most famous outfit for the occasion!
-
8. Alex Turner Confuses Us All (2014)
When Arctic Monkey's won Best Album, we were all left very confused with frontman Alex Turner's speech! He finished with dropping the microphone and walking off, telling Brit bosses to invoice him for it!
-
9. Jarvis Cocker Isn't Happy With Michael Jackson's Performance (1996)
And, arguably the most iconic of them all, Jarvis Cocker was not impressed with Michael Jackson's performance of Earth Song. According to Cocker, Jackson portraying himself as a Jesus-like saviour wasn't a winner. So much so, he caused enough chaos jumping on stage that he was dragged off by security!
